David Ballew

I have the 1850 census showing David in Polk County TN at age 36 and having been born in SC.

I believe that the information about his mother comes from an interview with a descendent in FL in 1964, I haven’t other documentation of her.

Bless her heart she did marry a John Hannah or Hanner, had two children. He was mean to her and eventually left her.  Her desc. in Fla says she lived to be 117 years old, I am not finding her yet on any other census, but am looking. He was married to Malinda Leopard, and later to a Sarah Fouts.

His son Absalum Posey moved to TX in 1894 where he joined family members of his wife Partilla Coxey. Her parents moved with them in ‘94.

David’s son William died in the Civil War, his son George Francis became a Baptist Preacher and moved to Alabama at some point.  He also served in the CSA, as a musician.

A.P. was my great grandaddy. RL Ballew

I am looking for information on the father of David Ballew (1791 - 1839) died in Morgan County, Alabama. Possibilities are Joseph or Robert Ballew who were brothers from VA born abt 1760. Both we revolutionary solders. Robert died in Morgan County, AL. in 1839 and Joseph move from Morgan County,  AL. in the early 1800's to White County, Arkansas to live with his son, RJ Ballew, around 1835. If you know of this RJ Ballew in Arkansas, it could give me a lead. Any information is helpful.

Lori Craytor, 19708 Yarrowsburg, Knoxville, MD 21758

I am searching for the ancestors of my third great grandmother, Anna K. Ballou. I am hoping someone can help me. She was born in Darmstadt GE in 1829 and was of Huguenot descent. The story is that there were four brothers who left France wither after the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre or after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (the story varies.) Two went to Germany and two went to England. She is descended from one of the two who went to Germany. Anyway, her family either lost their money somehow, or their finances deteriorated to the point she found she would not get the dowry her sisters received. She came to this country in 1844, to be a governess to a family in Baltimore, MD.

My mother remembers her great-grandfather (2nd son of Anna) saying he was a distant cousin of President Garfield, whose mother you probably know, was Eliza Ballou. Just recently I read in a book that Eliza Ballou was a descendant of Maturin Ballou. Maturin Ballou was also of Huguenot descents according to the book. Now, I am wondering if it is possible that Maturin Ballou was one of the four brothers. The book said there were two men with the name , born 100 years apart, one a descendant of the other. If so, my 2nd great grandfather would be a distant cousin to Garfield, as he said.

We would like to know more about Maturin Ballou (the elder) or if your organization crosses the Atlantic, if you have any correspondents in Germany I could write to. I would be grateful for any help you could give me, even just another place to direct my inquiries. Thank you for your time.

HUGUENOT IMMIGRANTS:

By Clyde Walton

When I first came across the mention of French Huguenots in my Ballew research, I was completely ignorant of who or what they were. Desiring to know more, I began to do some preliminary research. The more I delved into it the more interested I became. The origin of the name is somewhat obscure. Various theories have been proposed. In any event, they were actually Protestants, followers of the philosophy of John Calvin and other reformers. There are indications that the name "Huguenot" was a somewhat derogatory term used by their opponents. They seem to have adopted it and turned it to their own advantage.

In the hope that I can instill in you a desire to learn more of these people and the possibility that some of you might be descendants of Huguenots, as tradition maintains.
