This year has been a good year for me because through the association, different people have found more information of our ancestors. The search goes on and connections are being made. We will be having the Ballew Reunion at the same church this year. It will be across the road from the church at the Family Life Center. I thought that last year was the best and hope the 2011 will be better. Please come and bring your stories, pictures, and anything about Ballews that you would like to share.
Have reserved the Mt. Lebanon Church Family Life Center for August 20, 2011 for reunion
Harold Ballew, rare book dealer and founding member of the Ballew Association, recently acquired a nineteenth century book containing valuable pieces of Ballou history. He already knew that James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, was related to the Ballous. The book, dated 1822, is signed by Eliza Ballou Garfield, mother of James Abram Garfield. Between the pages was found an early postcard picturing "Lawnfield", the President’s home in Mentor, Ohio.
Abram Garfield (1799-1833) married Eliza Ballou in 1820 and they had five children: Mehitabel Garfield (b. 1821), m. Stephen Trowbridge in
1837; Thomas Garfield (b. 1822); Mary Garfield (b. 1824), m. Marenus Larrabee in
1844; James Garfield (1827-1829); and James Abram Garfield, LL.D. (1831-1881),
president Hiram College; member Ohio Senate; colonel 42d Ohio Volunteers; major
general of volunteers; member of Congress; U. S. senator-elect; President of the
United States; m. 1858 to Lucretia Rudolph (1832-1918).
THE BALLEW FAMILY ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL REUNION Saturday, August 21, 2010 The reunion was held at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Greer, South Carolina. Thirty nine people arrived and mingled until noon to share family information and updates since last year. Former co-presidents, Anne Kielman and William Ballew announced their recent wedding the week before and received hugs and congratulations from the attendees. This reunion was different in that a number of people brought their laptops and a lot of data was being shared. The reunion began with tables filled with covered dishes filled with delicious food enjoyed by all. After lunch the meeting began with President Sybil Wilson’s welcome talk. Members were asked to tell how they became associated with the Ballew Association. Ron Phillips of Virginia, one of Renney Belue’s descendants, began by telling about his DNA matches with Thomas M. Ballew and others searching that line. He found a 1766 land transfer signed by Renney Pruett in three places. He asked two FBI agents, formally trained in handwriting analysis, to trace the handwriting of Renney Belue documents and this one by Renney Pruett. The FBI looks at "differences" in signatures, not "similarities". The handwriting analysis concluded that the signatures on all the documents were made by the same individual. Thus, he believes that Renney Belue and Renney Pruett is the same person. Allen Murphy of Greenville, South Carolina said he was off Abraham’s line and is gathering information on the different Ballew lines by visiting cemeteries and cataloging the information on his laptop. Brent B. Goodwin of Alabama said his mother also goes back to Renney per the 1900 Census. Harold Ballew of the Executive Advisory Committee talked about his DNA results and distributed a handout showing how he had traced back to a common ancestor with two other members, Garrett Ballew of Alaska and Glenn Ballew of Tennessee. Harold’s father was James Ervin Ballew, born 1881, his grandfather was George Washington Ballew born in 1848, his great grandfather was Jacob Ballew born in 1807, and his great, great grandfather was George Washington Belew, born circa 1780, who proved to be the common ancestor.Harold first heard about DNA in the 1950s when in college and then at CDC in the 1960s. Initially used to prove a child’s paternity, DNA eventually proved useful in the field of genealogy. Every family needs to have DNA run by one member. Mitochondrial DNA is too broad right now, but the Y chromosome has been proven over many years.
Thomas M. Ballew said that Ron Mitchell and others who were off the Abraham/Renney/ Pruett had been known to him all his life and now he finds they may be related. Two years ago he took a trip to Glassy Mountain with Dean Campbell who takes groups to tour Dark Corner and lectures about the families who lived in that area. We held the election of officers and they remain the same as 2010 except Robert Wayne Ballew is Vice President of the Association and Georgia Smith volunteered to work on the Journal Committee. Jeanie Ballew Vickers photographed the attendees and will make the group photo available soon. JEAN H. BALLEW

I have many cabinet pictures and other pictures of this family Mostly of George Edward and his brother James Marion. I would like to share these with the right family and hope to get some that others might be willing to share with me. Many thanks, Gale Rotan --------------------- Hello Paul, Yes, think I have finally found Nellie Willey Ballou. (She was my gdfa's sister). Ballou in Am. stated that Nellie d 5 July 1914, Great Falls, NH ....50% wrong, but date was correct. I spent many years using that data, searching for her.
Nellie died White Salmon, Oregon,5 July 1914 and was cremated. Oscar later married, Oct 1916, Oregon to Mrs. Emma (Cooper) Kellogg. Oscar died 23 Apr 1946, Portland, Oregon, and Emma died Nov 1948, Portland, Oregon.
Both Nellie and Oscar left wonderful obituaries and sounded like interesting folks.
Hope the Ballou in Am. will correct the error. Thank you, Peggy --------------------------------------- Paul, I am looking for acceptable confirmation that my great-great-grandfather, Reuben Belew, was the son of Jesse Belew, the son of Renney Belew. My Reuben was born in Union County, South Carolina in 1810 and he was married to Harriet Hale Spain, born in South Carolina in 1816. They left South Carolina around 1837, went to Lawrence County, Tennessee and then to Tishomingo County (later Prentiss County) Mississippi where Reuben died in 1879 and Harriet died in 1861. Reuben's siblings are believed to be Hezekiah, Isaiah, Eleanor, William and Anna. Reuben and Harriet's children were:Eliet Jane, John Wesley, Sarah Ann, Matilda D.,Susan, William Taylor, Frances, Neal Brown, Marion Harry, and Missouri. Any information about any of these Belews would be greatly appreciated.
